Pervasive Developmental Disorders

The "Pervasive Developmental Disorders" category encompasses several very serious conditions: Autism, Rett's Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Although these conditions form a meaningful cluster, they are distinct enough in symptomatology and causes to deserve individual treatment at the present time. All of the disorders included under this heading are both serious and pervasive. In addition, they all involve severe deficits in communication skills and social interaction, and they often involve stereotyped interests and behaviors, some of the latter self-injurious. They typically have an early onset, and usually involve mental retardation. In addition, it is not unusual for the victims to have medical problems, in addition to their behavioral limitations. General information on these disorders is available at a government web site.
