Motor Skills Disorder

This diagnosis is made only if a deficit in motor skills is sufficient to interfere with achievement at school or life at home. This diagnosis can be made in addition to a diagnosis of mental retardation if the motor skills deficit is significantly greater than would be expected, given the child's level of intellectual functioning. Surprisingly, estimates of the incidence of motor skills disorder run as high as 6% in young children, and the disorder can persist into adulthood. T

he first hints of this disorder usually occur when a child is delayed or awkward in sitting, crawling, or walking. The best treatment is perceptual-motor stimulation, but at present there is no complete and sure cure. Some clumsiness is likely to persist into adulthood, and the disorder is frequently accompanied by other disorders, with a disability in written expression one of the more likely ones. A much more detailed treatment is available in an article at this web site.
