Enuresis (Bedwetting)

Enuresis is a common problem of childhood; it does not really belong in a list of mental disorders, according to the National Enuresis Society. It cannot be diagnosed before the child is 5 years old, and only then if bedwetting is repeated at least twice a week for 3 months or causes significant distress in some part of the child's life. As with other "mental" disorders, it must not be the direct result of a medical or substance-related disorder. It is sometimes associated with Encopresis.

Enuresis can lead to other psychological problems, for example, poor self-image, because of teasing by playmates or conflict within the family. The condition usually, but not always, remits spontaneously, but drug treatments and alarms (the latter appear to work better in the long run) are very helpful and can hasten the process.

Read a book on the subject:

Getting to Dry : How to Help Your Child Overcome Bedwetting by Max Maizels, Diane Rosenbaum, Barbara Keating

Dry All Night : The Picture Book Technique That Stops Bedwetting by Alison Mack, David Wilensky (book for children)
