Couples
and Family Therapy
These therapies are just what their name
implies; they are likely to be administered by Marriage, Family, and Child
Counselors (MFCCs) or Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), who receive
very specialized training in conducting this type of therapy. Couples
whose marriages are not working well are frequent users of this type of
therapy, as are whole families whose children are having a difficult time.
While undergoing this type of therapy, the individuals involved are
typically seen both singly and as a group. This allows the individuals to
express their own views without the inhibiting influences of the other
members of the family in individual sessions. In group sessions the
problems can be worked out with everyone involved, as they must be
eventually if the problems are to be resolved within the family setting.
The therapist must perform a delicate balancing act if conflicts are to be
resolved. There are many such conflicts; a very common one is between
adolescents' desire to be independent and parents' desire to exercise some
control.
