Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder
As the name implies, this
is diagnosed when the person has only half of the Tourette
symptomology,
either a motor or a vocal tic. In addition, there can be only one motor
tic, rather than multiple as in the case of Tourette's. Motor tics often
involve involuntary movements of the head, including grimacing, head
banging, and blinking. Neck and shoulder twisting are also common, as are
more complex tics like deep knee bending, touching objects, or twirling
while walking.
The other alternative is vocal tics,
and, as in the case of motor tics, one is enough for a diagnosis if the
other criteria are met. Sniffing, snorting, and throat clearing can be
added as possibilities to the vocal tics mentioned above. Information on
Tourette's and related disorders is available at a fine web
site.
